Music scores and papers, 1883-2007.

The Temple/ David Gooding Music Collection consists primarily of liturgical music performed at The Temple/ Congregation Tifereth Israel in Cleveland, Ohio during the twentieth century. It contains anthologies and sheet music published in the U.S., 1883-1941, and some music manuscripts created for the congregation, 1905-1937. There are also manuscript scores and parts, correspondence (English) and some programs from the commissioning series run by Music Director David Gooding, 1964-1976. Finally there are Gooding's own synagogue manuscripts, 1962-2003, along with a CD recording of his Sabbath service Kol ha-Neshamah, 2001.

Heinrich Schalit was born in Vienna on January 2, 1886. His vision seriously impaired by childhood illness, Schalit studied music at Vienna's Jewish Institute for the Blind. At Vienna's Konservatorium für Musik und darstellende Kunst, he studied piano with Theodor Leschetizky and musical composition with Robert Fuchs.
